After what seemed to be a decade of “slacking” we are now moving over to RocketChat, a self-hosted alternative where we can continue our collaborations and communications together.

Even though RocketChat has a lot of similarities with Slack, there are important differences. We tried to identify the most relevant changes and collected them below.

TAGGING IN CHANNELS

Tagging everyone in a channel works slightly different than on Slack.

    • Use @all instead of @channel to tag all members of the channel you are currently in.
    • Use @here to reach all active people of the channel you are currently in.
SETTING REMINDERS

RocketChat offers several ways to create a reminder. Whenever you want to make a reminder out of a message you received (or sent yourself) you can hover over the message and click on the icon. Then click on Remind me about this and fill in the pop-up to set your reminder.

You can also create reminders at any given moment by typing any of the following commands as a message in RocketChat.

    • /remind – Opens a pop-up to create a reminder for yourself or a group of people.
    • /remind #channel – Opens a pop-up to create a reminder for a specific channel
    • /remind @user – Opens a pop-up to create a reminder for a specific user or users.
    • /remind list – List all your reminders.
